In 2014 Hindmarsh were proud to be selected by IKEA to build their first ever store in the ACT. The $40m single storey IKEA facility spanes over 7.2 hectares and opened in 2016. At completion the Canberra IKEA boasted 26,000sqm of warehouse space with high bay access, along with car parking for 800 vehicles on-site in the Majura Parkway Estate.

Long-term sustainability was at the heart of this project. In total 34,000 solar panels were installed on the roof to generate up to 25% of the store’s energy requirements. Moreover, stormwater systems were installed to collect and recycle rain water for use as irrigation on site. The store lighting systems utilises the latest LED technology and the air conditioning system adopted newly developed technology to minimse power usage requirements.

The building was designed and built to be well insulated with sandwich panel walls and roofing systems supported by optimsed structural steel framework. The store also incorporates two, six metre diameter revolving doors sourced from Europe.

The facility provides more than 7,200 products, 11,200sqm of combined furniture showrooms, market hall space and a 340 seat IKEA restaurant.
